About Us

Our Faith

Our Mission Statement

We are:
Christ’s caring community connecting people with God and with one another through worship, sharing our faith, teaching and learning, building loving relationships, and service, in order to answer God's call and make a difference.

The New Creed

• We are not alone.
We live in God's world.

• We believe in God:
Who has created and is creating,
Who has come in Jesus,
The Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new,
Who works in us and others
by the Spirit.

• We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God's presence,to live with respect in Creation,to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil,
to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen,
our Judge and our Hope.

• In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

Our Vision

We are joy-filled people
deeply connected to our purpose
deeply committed to one another
growing in faith and discipleship,
and inviting others into a deepening relationship with God.

Our Core Values, rooted in love are:

Faith - We live, grow and share faith in God as revealed in Jesus Christ: faith that feeds the heart and soul.

Connecting - We joyfully connect with God, one another and community in ways that nurture belonging, communion and a sense of purpose.

Caring - We lovingly care for one another and the community, spiritually, physically, and relationally.

Generosity - We give energy, time, talent and treasure for the good of others out of gratitude for God's gifts.

Respect - We respect God, humanity and all creation in ways that embrace unity in diversity.

Approach to Ministry

We invite people to enter into and deepen their relationship with God as disciples of Jesus Christ in the context of a vibrant, healthy community of faith. We nurture individuals as they grow in their relationship with God and one another within a small group ministry and through the discipleship practices of regular prayer, worship, scripture reading/study, service, spiritual friendships, and giving. In this we embody the spectrum of the 5 marks of the church: worship, teaching and learning, sharing our faith, building loving relationships, and service.

Weddings

At Como Lake United Church we are honoured to be part of the commitment of marriage. We support couples intentionally including the spiritual aspect of relationship through a ceremony grounded in the love of God through the Christian pathway.

We value healthy marriage and family relationships, which, contrary to popular belief, do not come naturally or automatically. Thus we encourage couples who are preparing for marriage - as well as those who are already married - to attend a workshop through The Marriage Project or other relationship enhancement retreats and workshops for couples on a regular basis

Como Lake United Church provides a modern sanctuary with seating available for up to 300 people and an experienced staff willing to help you make this special day reflect what you mean to each other.

Our Music Director will suggest music suitable for the processional, at the signing of the register, and for the recessional.

If you would like other musicians to be a part of your wedding, our music director will work with them to ensure that the music supports and enhances the ceremony.

Please contact the office at (604) 931-8555 for more information.

Funerals and Memorial Services

At a time of death, many families look to a faith community to provide comfort and support. Como Lake United Church would be honoured to assist you in creating a funeral or memorial service that celebrates the life of your loved one. Contact the office at (604) 931-8555 and we will help you make all necessary arrangements.

At the service the Minister or officiant will preside and the music will be provided. Do not hesitate to speak with the Minister about any special music or other requirements you may have for the service.

A reception or memorial tea may also be arranged.

Baptism

Parents and/or sponsors are asked to promise to raise their children in a Christian context, to Worship God and share in the mission and service of Christ. As Baptism designates membership and a commitment, services are only held during Church Worship, normally the third Sunday of the month, except in rare circumstances. Parents who present children for baptism will be asked to consider their personal relationship to Christ and the Church.
Adults who choose to be baptized or reaffirm their faith will be included in the same Baptism services.

Communion

Communion is offered at the first service of the month and alternates between intinction and traditional. Communion is a symbolic reminder of the Last Supper. The Minister leads the service and explains what is taking place. In the United Church, anyone may take Communion - this is the Lord's table, not the church’s and all who love God and are trying to follow in God's way, as shown by Jesus Christ, are welcome to partake. Customarily, we use ordinary bread and non-alcoholic grape juice.
